The stand out hit of Bluesfest 2013 that played to packed tents and huge acclaim! This exciting Northern Rivers production transports you back to 1967's San Francisco to celebrate some of the best music the 20th century ever produced. This is a world class production on a mission to spread the power of Music and Love. For one night you will believe that music can change the world.
TheSongs of the Haight Ashbury Stage Show celebrates the musical legacy of the artists who transformed the social fabric of America in a spontaneous cultural explosion that became known as '"The Summer of Love". It was in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco that this extraordinary event took place, a rundown area where the artists of the 1950's "Beat Generation" congregated and a subculture began. It gradually began attracting a wide diversity of young people who all had one idea in common; cultural revolution. By the mid 1960's so many beatniks, spiritualists, artists, travellers and musicians had come together and created so much groundbreaking art, music and philosophy that it has now gone down in modern history as a renaissance. This new artistic vanguard explored the musical landscape fearlessly and it is no surprise that powerful music was created that would go on to transform popular culture. These psychedelic sounds were so cool, groovy and popular that radio enthusiastically embraced them. The youth of American tuned in and turned on. The Music spread the message, "make love not war" and a wave of social and political change swept from San Francisco, across America and from there around the World.
In the Songs of the Haight Ashbury Stage Show your host is stand up comedian and social commentator, S Sorrensen. He guides the audience on a hilarious ride through this impressive musical history. A long time resident of the hills around Nimbin, S Sorrensen has an insiders view into alternative culture both eye opening and funny. He intersperses the musical performances with stories and anecdotes of the era with a charming irreverence. US expat James T will perform the songs with which he toured the world for 10 years as the singer and instrumentalist with Canned Heat. His career highlights include sharing the stage with legends such as John Lee Hooker and touring with The Band, Big Brother and the Holding Company and Country Joe. Multi award winning Lil'Fi will sing Janis Joplin with an unique authority that comes from living the life of a true believer on the path of the blues, this "spirit-raiser" has been described by many as channeling Janis. Connor Cleary is an electrifying performer who seems to have been predestined for this show, one of the first things he learnt at the age of 10 on the guitar was Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile", he has been hooked ever since and breathes Hendrix from every cell . Bill Jacobi's sweet finger-pickin-tramp-roots style is a perfect marriage with Country Joe, Arlo Guthrie and Dylan. World folk rising star Andrea Soler sings Joni Mitchell with her distinctive honeyed tones. Mystical, enigmatic and powerful, Diana Anaid will perform the music of Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane. "White Rabbit" could have been written for Diana Anaid and she stamps it with a signature that is unforgettably hers. All the performers are backed by the All-Star-Full-Tilt-Band who will have you rocking out of your seats and yelling for more.
This is the authentic Haight Ashbury experience and not to be missed!
